Evil Superuser’s HOWTO: Launching instances to do your bidding
11:15am
You click ‘run’ on the OpenStack dashboard, or launch a new instance via the api. Some provisioning magic happens and soon you’ve got a server created especially for you. Did you ever wonder what magic happens to a standard image on boot? Have you wanted to launch instances and have them into your infrastructure with no manual interaction?
Cloud-init is software that runs in most linux instances. It can take your input and do your bidding. Learn what things cloud-init magically does for you and how you can make it do more.
Also, take advantage of the after-talk to pester cloud-init developers on what is missing or throw rotten fruits in their direction.
Speakers: Scott Moser, Ubuntu Server Team & Joshua Harlow, Yahoo

Deploying a Hybrid Cloud with OpenStack: Dynamic Service Automation
9:00am
Hybrid cloud represents the next evolution in enterprise cloud architecture and enables businesses to enjoy the best of both worlds: infrastructure resource elasticity with the flexibility of a public cloud, and the security, control and regulatory compliance of a private cloud.
As ideal as hybrid cloud may sound, it still can face challenges from both sides. There are still significant complexities to federate disparate domains in the wide area networks together to securely and reliably connect and scale public and private clouds in an integrated way. Operational challenges of managing heterogeneous environments with different architecture requires a new approach, as well as a clean approach to agile software delivery and continuous integration. Finally, there is a need to create these environments in a secure, scalable, and multi-tenant manner.
Speakers: John Zannos, VP Alliances & Jennifer Lin, Juniper
Repeatable benchmarking of OpenStack architectures
11:00am
As you plan for and execute your OpenStack installation it’s important to make sure you pick components that meet your needs for your workloads. In this session we’ll go over how to benchmark components in any permetation of OpenStack install in order to best select which component works for your hardware with your planned workloads.
Speaker: Marco Ceppi
Enabling Business Agility with OpenStack
3:30pm
Once you’ve decided to incorporate OpenStack into your IT strategy, what are the next steps? With Senior Enterprise leaders in mind, this session provides a pathway to successfully integrate OpenStack into your business strategy. We’ll provide insight into Enterprise workload selection, discuss planning considerations for YoY funding, and explore how to gain acceptance from your developer community and your business partners.
Speakers: Mark Baker, OpenStack Product Manager; Dave Pitzely, Comcast; Yih Leong Sun, Liberty IT

The OpenStack Summit talk selection process is broken
12:05pm
OpenStack is big and everybody wants to be a part of it. More and more vendor organisations want to ride the OpenStack wave and see getting talks on the summit schedule as a key way to strengthen their position as an OpenStack mover and shaker. The net result is 1500+ talk submissions which the current selection process cannot handle. There has to be a better way, join Mark Baker to discuss problems with the current process and how it might be improved.
Speaker: Mark Baker, OpenStack Product Manager
Understanding where value is created in your business with IT
2:20pm
For a long time big Enterprises have spent big buck on Enterprise software to support their enterprise activities. Smart organisations are starting to realise that their resources should be focused where business value is created – the areas where they can create a secret sauce that will give them an advantage over competitors. Every other aspect of their business should utilise commodity as much as possible to minimise cost and increase flow of resources in secret sauce creation. Implementing cloud gives your organisation an opportunity to examine where value is created and which technology services should be moved across to commodity apps and infrastructure, after all, if you take your existing stack and put it on cloud then you are failing to evolve, and we all know how that ends.

MongoDB and MySQL: Database Performance and Availability in OpenStack Deployments
3:10pm
– What is the impact of virtualisation and the OpenStack infrastructure on database performance?
– How can we make MongoDB and MySQL highly available with no data loss and no single points of failure?
– Which storage provides the best tradeoff between availability and performance?
– What is the impact of typical network configurations on database access?
– What do I gain and lose when I use Trove?
In this presentation you will find answers to these questions and to other common questions related to the deployment, configuration and use of MongoDB and MySQL databases in OpenStack.
We will review and analyse the results of popular benchmarks for MongoDB and MySQL in typical configurations, and some typical architectures implemented by users to achieve optimum performance and high availability.
Please note that this is not a comparison between two database servers: MongoDB and MySQL have been selected as they are the most used databases in the cloud, as they often coexist in users’ environments.
Speaker: Ivan Zoratti
Details of our dedicated track day will be published soon.
